Finding Treasure in Small Windows of Time With Our Children

We did not find any gold nuggets, but we did find some time and make memories that we can treasure for a lifetime. My friend Joe White once told me that kids spell love-T I M E. It doesn’t take lots of money or planning, just be purposeful with the time we have and grab those windows of opportunity that we find ourselves in and make the most of them. Continue reading

The Importance of Collecting Memories

This weekend was a rainy cold weekend and the kids were restless. What a great time to think up something out of the norm to create a memory. So, off we went to Wabash feed store in downtown Houston where we bought two full grown Rhode Island Red hens. Continue reading

Camp Applegate “Family Night At The Ditch”

“Family Night At The Ditch” has become one of our summer time favorites. It sounds like an episode from Hillbilly Heaven. In this manicured gated community there is a drainage ditch that runs through the middle of the neighborhood. Continue reading

Giving the Perfect Christmas Gift

I am writing to the husbands and fathers who, like me, find it easy to let our wives shop for the kids Christmas gifts and are quick to pick up a gift card or buy off the list provided for our wives. While this may be the path of least resistance and an easy way to check Christmas gifts off the list, we are the ones who miss out the most. Continue reading

Community Service: Learn New Skills, Help Neighbors, Build Character

We invested 4 hours at Johnson Chapel in Northeast Houston and gained a memory for a lifetime. We created memories of service to the community, a memory of learning about construction and repairs, and a memory of working together. To be honest none of us were looking forward to getting up early Saturday morning for a service project. My two sons have little to no construction experience and were anxious about their lack of ability to contribute. Continue reading

Learning to Finish What You Start Even When The Project Doesn’t Work Out

My son was over his head and really would have preferred to back out of the project. My neighbor and I discussed the situation and recognizing this was as much about teaching a life lesson to my son as it was about fixing the problem thought it would be good to push through the problem and work toward a satisfactory solution. Continue reading
